  2. Nonfiction: "desiderata"
  3. Fiction: "Sonata for harp & bicycle

HW:

  1. work on final draft of research report ----->DUE Monday 10/27/08

Today in Sr.Salma's English class we turned in our vocabulary packet for lesson 7. Then we started the spelling test. After the spelling test, we corrected our partners paper. Then we passed it up to Sr.Salma. When we were done with the annual spelling test stuff, we took out a piece of paper and wrote down the elements of non-fiction, regarding the homework that we had the night before.

The elements of non-fiction:-

Narrator: is always the author, a real person- not a imaginary speaker

Audience: is the reader of the text and who the author is "speaking" to

Purpose: is the reason the author has chosen to write the text

  • to explain
  • to infrom
  • to persuade
  • to entertain
  • to report real-life events
  • to share thought/ experiences

TYPES OF ESSAYS INCLUDED: narrative, reflecsive, expository, persuasive, descriptive

After we wrote down these notes, and discussed them in class, Sr.Salma had some of us students read our homework, and give some of our thoughts on why the story we finished reading, "Desiderata", for homework, was non-fictio, based on the notes we took. After that, we took notes on the elements of fiction.

The elements of fiction:-

Character: people, animals, and/ or imaginary creatures that take part in the story. Main character vs. minor

Setting: the time and place in which happens to whom- is built around a conflict

Theme: the main message of the story, usually not stated directly

Point of view: the perspective from which the story is narrated

  • first-person
  • second-person
  • third-person limited
  • third-person omniscient

That's basically what we did in class, because the bell rang before we could get to number three on the agenda. Have a great weekend!! Salaams.
